The hundreds of cops who carried out the raid on Zuccotti Park deliberately kept the press and even legal observers away from the scene — thus hiding the city’s actions from public scrutiny.
Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly deny that. The nighttime sweep simply aimed “to reduce the risk of confrontation in the park . . . to minimize disruption to the surrounding neighborhood,” Bloomberg claimed Tuesday.
The crackdown, of course, came just ahead of major solidarity marches planned for Thursday by unions and community groups on the two-month anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement. The biggest of those marches was planned for right here. Bloomberg’s raid will likely make Thursday’s march even bigger.

“This heavy-handed act has made us more determined to support these kids,” one city union leader said yesterday.
There is, for instance, the case of City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez (D-Washington Heights), who rushed to Zuccotti Park when the raid started and was arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Despite a potential lawsuit against the author of "No Easy Day," Penguin Books is not delaying or canceling its highly anticipated release.
“At this time, we see no reason to change our plans,” Christine Ball, spokeswoman for Penguin Group USA’s Dutton imprint, said in a statement. Rather than delay the book’s release, the publisher moved up its sale date from September 11 to September 4 “to let the book speak for itself.”
The publisher has also increased its initial print run from 200,000 copies to 575,000.
"No Easy Day” is a first-person account of the execution of the one of the world’s most notorious terrorist leaders, written from the perspective of Navy SEAL Matt Bissonnette. It includes descriptions of the raid against Bin Laden that directly contradict the US government's official version.
Although the book doesn’t come out for several more days, its pre-orders have already brought it to the No. 1 spot on Amazon’s best-seller list, and some advance copies have already been released to the media.
It is unlikely that the government would try to halt publication of the book, but the Pentagon may still want to take legal action against Bissonnette for violating two nondisclosure agreements by failing to submit the book to a security review prior to publication.
Pentagon Press Secretary George Little is currently reading an advance copy of the book to determine the extent of the legal action his department can take against the author.
“Further public dissemination of your book will aggravate your breach and violation of your agreements,” the Pentagon’s top lawyer, Jeh Johnson, wrote in a letter faxed to the ex-SEAL.
The Pentagon is also “considering pursuing against you, and all those acting in concert with you, all remedies legally available to us in light of this situation,” he wrote.
Bissonnette’s lawyer, Robert Luskin, claims that his client has not breached any of his nondisclosure agreements and that the author had “sought legal advice about his responsibilities before agreeing to publish his book and scrupulously reviewed the work to ensure that it did not disclose any material that would breach his agreements or put his former comrades at risk.”
In a possible attempt to avoid government criticism, Bissonnette wrote in the author’s note, “If you’re looking for secrets, this is not your book.”
In a civil court case, the Justice Department could attack the book’s profits. Should the government win the case, it would reap a portion of, or all the profits – even if the book contains no classified information.
But if the Pentagon does determine that the book contains classified information, Bissonnette could have to answer to criminal charges in a federal court.
“Whether it is administration officials or Special Forces operators, national security leaks are wrong and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent possible,” said chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee Rep. Peter King.
President of Special Operations-OPSEC Scott Taylor called on the Justice Department on Monday to block the book’s publication and distribution until the government has the chance to properly review it.
But the Penguin Group and Bissonnette are not backing down.
“Bisonnette’s fate is unclear, as is his book’s,” writes the New York Daily News.
But one thing is clear: the details of one of the most classified and contested US operations in history will soon make their way into more American living rooms than Washington ever expected.

On Sunday, a meeting of senior officials opened the 2012 APEC summit, which is underway on Russky Island, in the city of Vladivostok.
“I’m really pleased to welcome you to the beautiful city of Vladivostok. We are now at Russky Island, where our leaders will get together in just under one week,” Igor Morgulov, a Russian deputy foreign minister, said at the opening of the meeting.
Morgulov urged the participants to work productively during the week, so that everything would be in order for the meeting of the APEC nations' leaders on September 8-9.
The bloc's International Youth Forum also started its work on Sunday. The forum brings together participants from the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China, Korea, Japan, Russia and other countries.
During the three-day get-together, young scientists, students, businessmen and politicians will discuss the most topical problems of Asia-Pacific region and will try to hammer out solutions for them.
Some 10,000 guests are expected to visit Vladivostok during the summit week to discuss pressing economic and political issues.
Russia, an APEC member since 1998, has been prepping hard for the event. The summit's budget is estimated at 700 billion rubles (approximately $21.75 billion), including 200 billion rubles (approximately $6 billion) from the federal budget.
A brand new complex of buildings was built on Russky Island to accommodate guests and to house summit events. The complex has the infrastructure of a luxury resort and includes tennis courts, water falls and fountains.
The island itself was connected with the mainland by two new bridges unique to Russia, where no cable bridge of such length had ever been built before.
The APEC summit begins a string of large-scale international events in Russia in coming years. In 2014 the country will host the Winter Olympics in the Black Sea resort town Sochi, and in 2018, the World Football Championship.

Days before the doomed financial broker filed for bankruptcy, MF Global conducted "unexplained wire transfers" that led to a $900 million shortfall in client funds, leading customers like Gerald Celente to learn that their accounts had been looted and setting the precedent for internal bank runs as more big firms go bust.
According to Bloomberg, "Examiners from CME Group Inc., the world's largest futures exchange, found unexplained wire transfers at MF Global Inc. and a $900 million shortfall in client funds during the weekend the failing broker was talking with possible buyers, a person briefed on the matter said."
CME noticed the missing funds on October 30, but MF Global didn't inform the Commodity Futures Trading Commission until the day after, suggesting that the transfers were made, "in a manner that may have been designed to avoid detection," according to CME.
The suspicious cash movements are now being probed by the U.S. Justice Department.
MF Global trustee James Giddens said in a court filing yesterday that customers would get back 60 per cent of their account funds, prompting fury amongst clients, many of whom used their accounts for business collateral and living expenses.
Although individuals were burned by the broker's downfall, larger clients were protected from the fallout because they had the miraculous fortune of withdrawing all their funds just weeks before the collapse.

The astronauts were unable to properly install a Main Bus Switching Unit (MBSU1) during the previous repair attempt on August 30, causing the station to lose power from two of its solar panels.
A Direct Current Switching Unit (DCSU) also malfunctioned – possibly due to a sudden spike in voltage – sending a third solar panel offline, Interfax reported, citing an unnamed source in the Russian space industry.
“That is why three solar panels out of eight do not function and some scientific and life support equipment has been disconnected,” the source said.
The ISS crew was forced to disconnect secondary scientific instruments in both the Russian and American modules of the ISS, the source said. Scientists also reported that the alpha magnetic spectrometer delivered during the final flight of NASA’s space shuttle program is frequent cause of energy supply problems on the station.
The power rationing will continue until September 5 when NASA’s Sunita Williams and Japan’s Akihiko Hoshide will conduct a spacewalk to finalize the installation of the MBSU1 unit.
While attempting to replace the MBSU1 during the August 30 repair attempt, astronauts encountered problems while trying to unscrew two fastening bolts. The new unit was then fastened improperly, which caused a connective failure in the equipment. The unexpected difficulties caused the spacewalk to last for eight hours and 16 minutes, instead of the planned six-and-a-half hours.
Besides connecting the MBSU1, the astronauts are expected to install and connect power cables for Russia’s Multipurpose Laboratory Module, which is expected to arrive at the ISS next year. The crew also plans to replace an outboard TV camera and a lighting unit, and to repair a turntable boom manipulator of the SSRMS (Canadarm 2) station.
It is possible that the astronauts will be forced to conduct a third spacewalk to repair the broken DCSU switchboard, and to restore the inoperative third solar panel, Interfax reported.
The spacewalk will begin on September 5 at 11:15 GMT.
The ISS is no stranger to emergency situations: In December 2010, all communication with the ISS was lost during a failure of the station’s fiber optic network.
And in May 2008, the station’s toilet stopped functioning. Though the crew managed to fix the problem, astronauts had to relieve themselves in the toilet of the Soyuz space craft docked with the ISS while the repairs were being made.

Days before the doomed financial broker filed for bankruptcy, MF Global conducted "unexplained wire transfers" that led to a $900 million shortfall in client funds, leading customers like Gerald Celente to learn that their accounts had been looted and setting the precedent for internal bank runs as more big firms go bust.
According to Bloomberg, "Examiners from CME Group Inc., the world's largest futures exchange, found unexplained wire transfers at MF Global Inc. and a $900 million shortfall in client funds during the weekend the failing broker was talking with possible buyers, a person briefed on the matter said."
CME noticed the missing funds on October 30, but MF Global didn't inform the Commodity Futures Trading Commission until the day after, suggesting that the transfers were made, "in a manner that may have been designed to avoid detection," according to CME.
The suspicious cash movements are now being probed by the U.S. Justice Department.
MF Global trustee James Giddens said in a court filing yesterday that customers would get back 60 per cent of their account funds, prompting fury amongst clients, many of whom used their accounts for business collateral and living expenses.
Although individuals were burned by the broker's downfall, larger clients were protected from the fallout because they had the miraculous fortune of withdrawing all their funds just weeks before the collapse.
"Both the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange were charged with overseeing MF Global, their clearing member. If we are to believe them, they had no idea of any difficulties within the firm before customer accounts went missing just a few days before the collapse. But someone clearly knew of the cratering positions and imminent collapse of MF Global, as billions of dollars of accounts were "coincidentally" withdrawn," writes Huffington Post's Daniel Dicker, noting how funds in accounts owned by the billionaire Koch brothers were withdrawn just in time, clearly suggesting that big players got a "heads up" that MF Global was going down.
Although the collapse of MF Global was assured when it came to light that the broker was heavily exposed to the European debt crisis, causing the broker's stock price to plummet, Fox Business reports that numerous circumstances indicate the downfall was in the works weeks before, drawing attention to the fact that employees didn't receive commissions for the third quarter and were fired two weeks before the firm filed for bankruptcy.

The Khan Al-Ahmar elementary school was built in 2009 with the help of local and international humanitarian groups. The clay-and-tires structure employed 11 teachers, and instructed students belonging to some five neighboring Jahalin Bedouin tribes. Israeli authorities have issued a demolition order, claiming that the encampment containing the school was built illegally.
Demolishing the school would force the children to trek across the desert to Jericho for class, the closest place where education facilities are located. The Israeli military claimed that they will not destroy the school or the encampment until an alternate learning institution for the students is located.
According to UN reports, Tel Aviv has ordered the demolition of around 3,000 structures, including homes, cisterns, solar-power generators and 18 schools, including the Khan al-Ahmar Mixed Elementary School. Only 360 such demolitions have been carried out so far.
Israeli authorities believe that moving the indigenous population to planned communities will lift them out of poverty. Bedouin communities argue that their culture and its centuries-old traditions are being jeopardized by Jewish expansion.
The children of the Jahalin tribe previously attended school in Jericho, about 20 kilometers away, but school bus service was often unreliable. Locals now say that they may have no other choice: "We'll go to school until it's demolished," the Washington Post cited 10-year-old Islam Hussein as saying,

More than 70,000 Bedouins in 35 villages live in territory clamed by Israel. The settlements are considered to be ‘unrecognized’ by the Israelis, and the inhabitants are often referred to as ‘trespassers on state land.’

Morsi gave the speech on Thursday during at the summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Tehran.
It was an Egyptian head of state's first official visit to Iran since the Islamic Revolution of 1979. It was also only Morsi's second official visit abroad as president since being elected this June.
“Our solidarity with the struggle of the Syrian people against an oppressive regime that has lost its legitimacy is an ethical duty, as it is a political and strategic necessity,” he said at the meeting. His speech also included a call for the Syrian opposition to unite.
However, during his speech, the translator for Iran, where Persian is spoken, substituted the word "Syria" for "Bahrain."
“This is a violation, fabrication and unacceptable media behavior that shows how Iranian media is interfering in Bahrain’s internal affairs,” the BNA, Bahrain’s government-run news agency, said on Saturday.
The speech was transmitted live with a Farsi (as Persian is called in Iran) translation on two Iranian channels, IRIB Channel One and IRINN, although the Bahraini statement didn’t mention which channel it said changed the words.
The head of Iran’s state media, Ezatollah Zarghami, admitted the mistake but insisted it was mistranslated on only one of the country's channels, IRIB Channel One.
He added that while President Morsi was addressing the summit, a technical error occurred that caused the translator to make the mistake.
Zarghami added that the Western media were quick to seize upon the error. “In a verbal mistake, the translator said 'Bahrain' instead of 'Syria,' and this became a pretext for Western media,” he said.
The scandal has become an embarrassment for Iran, which found itself in the international spotlight due to the summit, which brought representatives from 120 nations.
Iranian media activist Ameed Maqdam expressed astonishment at the error. Maqdam said he heard "Bahrain" mentioned three times in the simultaneous Persian translation broadcast on Channel One.
“For us who were listening on the radio, whenever Mursi said 'Syria' the Persian translator, who did not have the required integrity, translated it as 'Bahrain!!'” one listener complained online to the Asr-e Iran newspaper, as quoted by Reuters.
The incident is diplomatically sensitive because Iran, a Shi’ite Muslim power, is an ally of the Alawite religious minority that rules Syria. Alawite Islam is an offshoot of Shia Islam.
Iran has previously expressed sympathy with the democratic protest movement in Bahrain against the ruling al-Khalifa family, which put down a democratic rebellion in 2011 by the majority Shiite population.

Days before the doomed financial broker filed for bankruptcy, MF Global conducted "unexplained wire transfers" that led to a $900 million shortfall in client funds, leading customers like Gerald Celente to learn that their accounts had been looted and setting the precedent for internal bank runs as more big firms go bust.
According to Bloomberg, "Examiners from CME Group Inc., the world's largest futures exchange, found unexplained wire transfers at MF Global Inc. and a $900 million shortfall in client funds during the weekend the failing broker was talking with possible buyers, a person briefed on the matter said."
CME noticed the missing funds on October 30, but MF Global didn't inform the Commodity Futures Trading Commission until the day after, suggesting that the transfers were made, "in a manner that may have been designed to avoid detection," according to CME.
The suspicious cash movements are now being probed by the U.S. Justice Department.
MF Global trustee James Giddens said in a court filing yesterday that customers would get back 60 per cent of their account funds, prompting fury amongst clients, many of whom used their accounts for business collateral and living expenses.
Although individuals were burned by the broker's downfall, larger clients were protected from the fallout because they had the miraculous fortune of withdrawing all their funds just weeks before the collapse.

The fact that the planet is being bombarded with chemicals from high-altitude spraying as part of numerous geoengineering programs being conducted by U.S. government agencies and universities that have been approved with no oversight whatsoever can no longer be denied.
The re-classification of global warming, a highly contentious and often scientifically fraudulent pseudo-science, as a "national security threat" has been exploited by governments as an excuse to play God, green lighting secret experiments on a massive scale that carry innumerable dangers to humans and their environment.
However, now that increasing awareness of geoengineering as a result of the chemtrails phenomenon has propagated widely, authorities are slowly being forced to disclose certain aspects of the program. We are now not far away from full disclosure of the true extent of geoengineering experimentation.
Scientists now admit that vapor trails from aeroplanes are creating "artificial clouds" that block out the sun. This is no longer a matter of debate. The chemtrail "conspiracy theorists" were proven correct.
Reading University's Professor Keith Shine told the Daily Mail last year that the clouds "formed by aircraft fumes could linger 'for hours', depriving those areas under busy flight paths, such as London and the Home Counties, of summer sunshine."
"Experts have warned that, as a result, the amount of sunlight hitting the ground could be reduced by as much as ten per cent. Professor Shine added: "Over the busiest areas in London and the South of England, this high-level cloud could cover the sky, turning bright sunshine into hazy conditions for the entire area. I expect the effects will get worse as the volume of air traffic increases."
The report also makes reference to a 2009 Met Office study which found that high-level winds did not disperse contrails that later formed into clouds which covered an astonishing 20,000 miles.
Of course, only the completely naive would suggest that there is no connection between chemtrails that block out the sun, a phenomenon that has been ongoing for over a decade, and open calls on behalf of scientists to 'reduce global warming' by injecting the atmosphere with aerosols.
Mainstream science and academia has gone from dismissing chemtrails as a fantasy of paranoid conspiracy theorists to now accepting that they exist but claiming that they are natural and not artificially induced, despite numerous patents and scientific proposals that focus around using man-made dispersal of aerosols to alter the atmosphere.
The proposal to disperse sulphur dioxide in an attempt to reflect sunlight was discussed in a September 2008 London Guardian article entitled, Geoengineering: The radical ideas to combat global warming, in which Ken Caldeira, a leading climate scientist based at the Carnegie Institution in Stanford, California, promoted the idea of injecting the atmosphere with aerosols.
"One approach is to insert "scatterers" into the stratosphere," states the article. "Caldeira cites an idea to deploy jumbo jets into the upper atmosphere and deposit clouds of tiny particles there, such as sulphur dioxide. Dispersing around 1m tonnes of sulphur dioxide per year across 10m square kilometres of the atmosphere would be enough to reflect away sufficient amounts of sunlight."

Unification Church founder Sun Myung Moon dies at 92
Self-proclaimed messiah Rev. Sun Myung Moon, who turned his Unification Church into a worldwide religious movement, has died aged 92 due to complications from pneumonia.
Sun Myung Moon was born in 1920 in a town now located in North Korea. He claimed he was 16 when Jesus Christ called upon him to complete his unfinished work. During World War II, he moved to Japan, where he studied electrical engineering at Waseda University.
Moon returned to the Soviet-occupied part of Korea after the war was over and began preaching his teachings. That soon landed him in jail, and he was given a five-year prison sentence at a labor camp in the newly-independent communist country of North Korea. However, the Korean War cut short his prison sentence as UN troops took control of the camp and set him free.
Moon founded his religious movement, officially known as The Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of Christianity, in Seoul in 1954. In 1957 he published Divine Principle, which laid out the foundations of his religious movement and attained scripture status among his followers.
In 1971, Moon moved to the United States. In the following years, his church came into the media spotlight as Moon held mass weddings of thousands of followers.
He also organized a number of mass gatherings. An estimated 1.2 million people gathered for a rally in the South Korean city of Yoido, while some 300,000 supporters flocked to the Washington Monument for another one of his public meetings.
Later, Moon and the church transformed into a kind of business empire. This included the Washington Times newspaper, the New Yorker Hotel in Manhattan and Bridgeport University in Connecticut. In South Korea, a ski resort, a professional soccer team and other businesses were acquired. In North Korea, the church owns a hotel and a fledgling automaker.

The leader of the Unification Church, just as the movement itself, proved to be a highly controversial figure.
Accusations were soon voiced that the church was bilking followers out of money, and that its adherents, many young people among them, were brainwashed into joining. The church only said in response that all religious movements faced these kinds of accusations in their early stages.
Moon’s political ventures were also somewhat controversial. In 1974, as Richard Nixon faced increasing pressure to resign in the wake of the Watergate scandal, Moon told his followers to pray and fast in support of the president under fire. This was at a time when most of the public, and even some of Nixon’s own appointees, had ducked him.
A number of other right-wing politicians appeared to be on very good terms with Moon. He set up the News World Corporation, which was responsible for resurrecting the New York Tribune in 1976, and starting The Washington Times in 1982. Both of these papers were perceived to be right of center, and were often accused of the furthering the agenda of the Reagan administration. A House committee chaired by Democrat Donald Fraser also investigated links between the Unification Church and South Korean intelligence.
Moon’s increasingly warm relations with the Republicans who took control of the Oval Office in the 1980s did not help him avoid jail, however. In 1982, the religious leader was sentenced to 18 months in prison for improperly filling out tax returns. He was released after 13 months for good behavior. During his stay in prison, he found support in televangelists such as Jerry Fallwell, who accused the jury that sentenced him of prejudice.
Nevertheless, his jail sentence did not hamper his relations with the neoconservatives in power. Both Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher eventually extolled Moon and his media empire for helping bring down the Soviet Union.
Moon’s closeness with fierce anti-communists the likes of Reagan did not prevent him from traveling to North Korea for a meeting with the country’s longterm leader Kim Il-Sung. Moon reported having a friendly chat about common hobbies and noted that the two had many similarities.
Although Moon returned to South Korea in the 1990s, he continued to run his multibillion-dollar business empire, which by that time had extended its reach across dozens of countries. Operating under the auspices of Moon and his subordinates were hospitals, charities, colleges, sports clubs, think tanks, TV channels and even ballet companies.
And despite being one of the most prominent capitalists and anti-communists of the world, Moon continued to receive birthday gifts, including Rolex watches and pricey flowers, from North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il. In turn, Moon sent condolence delegations to the funerals of Kim Il-Sung in 1994, and Kim Jong-Il in 2011.
In the late 2000s, Moon largely ceded control of his media empire and other ventures to his wife and sons.
In 2009, Moon returned to his matchmaker roots by marrying some 45,000 people in ceremonies worldwide. He also joined up some 7,000 people the following year in South Korea. However, these ceremonies did not spark the controversy they had brought thirty years earlier.
A number of other practices the church preaches have also generated controversy throughout the years. Followers are reportedly told to swear blind devotion to the True Father – Moon – and the True Mother – Moon’s wife Hak Ja Han Moon, meaning that they have to give up their lives for their faith if necessary.
In 1990 Moon visited the Soviet Union and met with President Mikhail Gorbachev, praising him for his political and economic reforms. Soon after the Communist empire was dissolved in 1991, branches of Moon's church started putting down roots in the post-Soviet area, most notably in Russia and Central Asia.
At first, Russian authorities tolerated and even endorsed some of the church’s initiatives. In a number of regions, the movement supplied textbooks to schoolchildren and organized seminars for students. However, by the end of the 1990s the Moscow began to grow increasingly wary of the church’s meddling in the education process.
Most of its branches were shut down for breaching the registration process, while the Russian government, just as many of its counterparts in Europe, classified the Unification Church as a sect. And just like in the United States, the churches were also accused of meddling in politics in an effort to cajole lawmakers to adopt favorable legislation.

Warg was wanted by Sweden on copyright infringement charges after failing to report for a yearlong prison sentence.
Authorities arrested Warg in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in an apartment above The Cadillac Bar and Grill, a popular expat hangout, TorrentFreak.com reported. The Swedish government issued an international arrest warrant for Warg in January, after he failed to appear for the start of his jail term.
“His arrest was made at the request of the Swedish government for a crime related to information technology," Cambodian police spokesperson Kirth Chantharith told AFP "We don't have an extradition treaty with Sweden but we'll look into our laws and see how we can handle this case.”
Warg was one of four co-founders of BitTorrent website The Pirate Bay, which was temporarily taken offline by Swedish authorities after a court ruled in 2009 that all four individuals were guilty of encouraging copyright violations, and sentenced them to one year in Swedish prison and millions of dollars in fines.
In a 2010 appeal against the verdict, the four maintained that no pirated material was actually distributed through their site. Three of the co-founders had their jail time reduced to sentences ranging from four to ten months, but their fines increased as a result of the appeal.
Warg – who was living in Phnom Penh at the time – claimed that his health was too poor for him to attend his sentencing, prompting the judge to uphold his prison sentence and $1.1 million in fines.
According to TorrentFreak, health issues have been a concern for Warg since 2010. He moved to Cambodia several years ago.
