The world according to Henry Kissinger

As he turns 88 this week, the world’s most famous diplomat is just as outspoken as ever, finds Philip Sherwell

For a sweeping historical tome on China written by the most famous living practitioner of international statecraft, Henry Kissinger’s latest book has a dedication striking for its unexpectedness. “To Annette and Oscar de la Renta”, it reads, a tribute to the fashion designer and his wife, who lent Kissinger their opulent home in the Dominican Republic for his writing.
But then the former US national security adviser and secretary of state has never been a conventional diplomat. Even when he dominated US foreign policy at the height of the Cold War, the Harvard professor with the distinctive German accent was also a media celebrity with a reputation as a ladies’ man. “Power is the ultimate aphrodisiac,” he once noted, dryly.
Another phrase associated with Kissinger is “shuttle diplomacy”, coined to describe his Middle Eastern peregrinations in the 1970s. And just days before turning 88 later this week, he is still advising – and still shuttling. This weekend, for instance, he is in London for a conference on how the world can defuse the threat of “loose nukes”. He arrives from Berlin where a prestigious prize – named after him and awarded annually for outstanding contributions to transatlantic ties – was presented by Bill Clinton to Helmut Kohl, the German chancellor who oversaw his country’s reunification.
But if the focus there was the success of the long-established Atlantic alliance, Kissinger is also busy promoting his model for a new Pacific community.
On China, his 13th book, is part grand historical tour, part riveting memoir, and part geopolitical analysis. With the world focused on the dramas of the Arab Spring and the killing of Osama bin Laden, it is a timely reminder that China and the US are jockeying for power and pre-eminence as the aspiring and existing superpowers of the 21st century.
Kissinger’s book connects China’s ancient past and philosophy to its current global ambitions. But its core is his personal involvement: the veteran statesman has visited China more than 50 times since making his first secret trip in 1971 to broker the great rapprochement between Chairman Mao and President Richard Nixon.
As interlocutor-in-chief, he has spent much of that time trying to explain the mysteries of the two countries to each other. “The relationship between China and the US is central to world peace and its importance reflects the shift in the centre of gravity of global equilibrium towards the Pacific. And, since I have probably had more experience and contact with high-level Chinese than any other American, I thought to sum up my conclusions could be relevant to considerations of where we go with the relationship.”
Kissinger is illuminating, for example, on the way the West tends to react to short-term crises while China takes the long view – and that long view can mean centuries, if not millennia.
“The Chinese approach to policy is conceptual while ours is pragmatic. For the Chinese, history is part of current reality. For America, current reality usually begins with the perception of a problem we are trying to solve now.”
He illustrates this with an example of Mao, during a border war with India, referring his commanders back to two historic Indo-Chinese conflicts. “It would be like a British prime minister calling his war cabinet together and saying that during the period of Charlemagne in Europe, we had the following adventures.
“This leads to different perceptions of the strategy of deterrence. In the West, we look to assemble overwhelming force; the Chinese look for a superior psychological balance. The West waits more or less passively for a provocation and then seeks to overwhelm it. The Chinese think that provocations have to be pre-empted, though not necessarily overwhelmed.”
Kissinger is an engaging and sharp interviewee. We meet in his spacious New York office lined with photographs of him with half a century’s worth of the great and the good: Kissinger with Barack Obama, say, and with George W Bush. And behind them, a portrait of Richard Nixon, the man who elevated him from academia to the most powerful job in American foreign policy.
“Don’t draw any conclusions from those photos. The cleaner moves them each day,” he insists, his accent still bearing witness to his Bavarian roots – his Jewish parents fled Nazi persecution in 1938 when he was 15. He also retains the measured tones of top-table diplomacy, parsing every phrase for nuance and emphasis.
Kissinger looks as distinctive as he sounds. Today he is wearing blue braces decorated with red scales of justice, but has swapped his trademark heavy dark-rimmed glasses for a contemporary steel-rimmed set. He is also a little shorter and rounder than in his days as an unlikely sex symbol: before marrying his second wife Nancy Maginnes, a philanthropist, in the mid-Seventies, he was linked to a string of glamorous women including, Candice Bergen, Jill St John, Shirley MacLaine and Liv Ullman, who called Kissinger, “the most interesting man I have ever met”.
As well as opening relations with China, Kissinger’s legacy is, well, legendary. He introduced realpolitik – the 19th century German concept of power politics – to the US, oversaw a policy of détente with the Soviet Union, and negotiated the end of the Vietnam War – winning the Nobel Peace Prize in the process even though critics have portrayed him as an international war criminal for the secret carpet-bombing of Cambodia and other dark Cold War episodes.
Realpolitik is a diplomatic modus operandi that is at odds with both the studious multilateralism of Obama, who arrived in office with a message to the world that he was going to tone down displays of American power, and the neo-conservatives who sought to spread democracy through American intervention.
But what is striking as Kissinger surveys recent world dramas, is that America’s current foreign policy highlights continuity with previous administrations as much as the fractures.
“President Obama clearly reflects a different viewpoint from his predecessors. On the rhetoric there is a substantial difference. But in his actions, there are considerable parallels. On the Osama bin Laden operation, there would have been no difference at all. On China and Russia, I do not see any significant difference.”
In the wake of events in the Arab Spring, Kissinger has developed a theory of “pragmatic idealism” in determining whether the US should intervene militarily abroad to support human rights and democracy, or only as an expression of vital national interests. “Our values impel us to alleviate human suffering,” he has written. “But as a general principle, our country should do so militarily only when a national interest is also at stake.”
But he accepts there are exceptions – and Libya is one of them. “I unenthusiastically endorsed intervention,” he says, although he does not back the broader interpretation by Britain and France of the United Nations mandate to protect civilians.
Kissinger also warns that we are only at the first stage of a dangerous “five-stage act” in Libya. “The true test is what emerges. One cannot deduce the outcome of a revolution from the pronouncements of those who start the revolution. And one has to assess a revolution not only in terms of its initial enthusiasm. As a general principle, the greater the destruction of existing institutions, the greater will be the violence in re-establishing order.”
He is disdainful of the “cocktail-party wisdom that we should have seen an explosion was coming” in the Arab world. And of bin Laden’s death, he notes: “It must have an effect on the morale of al-Qaeda and the view of their relevance, considering that there were so few protests in the Arab world.” It is also, he believes, a major domestic political boost for a president who had been tagged by critics as a “wimp”.
As Obama and David Cameron now assess the options for reducing their nations’ troop numbers in Afghanistan, the dilemma of how to withdraw forces from a far-away conflict zone is one of which Kissinger is all too aware. For although Nixon was elected in 1968 committed to ending the war in Vietnam, he wanted “peace with honour” and withdrawal “with dignity”.
So how does he think the US and its allies should be handling a situation in Afghanistan that is often compared to Vietnam?
“There is an emerging consensus that we should negotiate with the Taliban. But even if you can get an agreement from them about withdrawal how do you enforce that? Otherwise it develops into a unilateral withdrawal. That was the tragedy of Vietnam, where we thought we had an agreement but our domestic situation didn’t permit it.
“In Afghanistan, I think withdrawal will become a political necessity because of the inability to create a structure which we can turn over. So I would negotiate with surrounding countries who would be threatened by a terrorist Afghanistan if it emerged.”
And in this policy prescription of talks, he believes that including Pakistan is “an indispensable part”. He is not someone who wants Pakistan cut out of the loop after bin Laden was found hiding deep in its soil. “We should stop beating-up on Pakistan,” he says.
Since leaving office, Kissinger has run a lucrative international consultancy business, and his counsel has been sought by the six subsequent commanders-in-chief and countless foreign leaders. But it is with Chinese officials that he has struck the most consistent relationship; he recently had dinner with Dai Bingguo, the top official at the Chinese foreign ministry, who was visiting the US for talks.
That friendly meeting was a far cry from his first encounter with Chinese officials in 1971. After diplomats from both countries had established initial feelers, Kissinger set off for a tour of Asian states with a stop in Pakistan, which had good relations with the US and China.
Once there, Kissinger feigned a stomach upset and the line was put out that he was going to a former British hill station to recover. Instead, he and his team flew to Beijing.
Kissinger disappeared for 48 hours – this was an era when it was still possible to do that. Even so, the ruse almost failed when a British diplomat’s son spotted something wrong – his family had a home in the hill station, and when the boy watched the convoy that was supposedly carrying the sick US diplomat, he noted that several of the cars were empty.
“He told his father that I wasn’t in the convoy and his father told him not to be so silly,” Dr Kissinger recalls. “The boy was right, of course, but his father believed the official version.”
It was a great step into the unknown that involved a mix of drama, tension and mystery. As Kissinger co-drafted the joint communiqué at the end of the mission that would pave the way for Nixon’s visit to Beijing the following year, his Chinese counterpart, the premier Zhou Enlai, noted: “Our announcement will shake the world.”
But world-shattering import was not at the forefront of Kissinger’s thoughts. “When we were drafting it, I was not thinking we were making history; I was just trying to get the phrasing right. You don’t feel the drama when you’re in the middle of it; you just worry about the next step.”
Kissinger’s book has been criticised by some US reviewers who believe that he downplays the Tiananmen Square massacre – an approach that fuels the view of many that he considers democratic niceties and human rights an impediment to an uncompromising foreign policy.
“That is a philosophical debate where there can be respectful disagreements,” he says now, couching his position as ever in diplo-speak. “I was shocked by the actual events, but I believed in a policy of engagement rather than confrontation. Those of us who had access to the Chinese government sought to use our influence to improve human rights through quiet diplomacy rather than showdown.”
With Obama’s visit to the UK later this week, Kissinger has thoughts, too, on another bond: the so-called Special Relationship.
“I think this Administration started with no special feeling about the relationship – if anything, that Britain should be treated like any other European country.
“Although I don’t think the Special Relationship is what it was in its heyday during the Cold War, my impression is that the Administration has developed a greater appreciation for the special role that Britain is playing and can play. They will come [to the UK] with a more positive attitude and with the intention of restoring the high degree of confidentiality and trust that existed previously.”
Indeed, despite the superficial tensions he believes Britain’s performance over recent months has impressed them, notably in Libya. “The British Government seems to be handling Libya to the great satisfaction of the Administration. The White House believes that more should be done by the Europeans in Nato – and Britain is doing that.”

Does America have a Culture?

Paul Craig Roberts
Infowars.com
May 24, 2011
The culture of the United States is said to be a youth culture, which is defined in terms of entertainment: sex, rock music or its current equivalent, violent video games, sports, and TV reality shows. This culture has transformed the country and appears on the verge of transforming the rest of the world. There are even indications that secularized Arab and Iranian youth can’t wait to be liberated and to partake of this culture of porn-rock.
America’s former culture–accountable government, rule of law and presumption of innocence, respect for others and for principles, and manners–has gone by the wayside. Many Americans, especially younger ones, are not aware of what they have lost, because they don’t know what they had.
This was brought home to me yet again by some reader responses to my recent columns in which I pointed out that Strauss-Kahn, the IMF director (now former) accused of sexually assaulting a hotel maid, was denied the presumption of innocence. I pointed out that the legal principle of innocent until proven guilty was violated by the police and media, and that Strauss-Kahn was convicted in the media not only prior to trial but also prior to his indictment.
From readers’ responses I learned that there are people who do not know that a suspect is innocent until proven guilty by evidence in a public trial. As one wrote, “if he wasn’t guilty, he wouldn’t be charged.” Some thought that by “presumption of innocence” I was saying that Strauss-Kahn was innocent. I was accused of being a woman-hater and received feminist lectures. Some American women are more familiar with feminist mantras than they are with the legal principles that are the foundation of our society.
Many males also confused my defense of the presumption of innocence with a defense of Strauss-Kahn, or if they knew about “innocent until proven guilty,” didn’t care. Right-wingers wanted Strauss-Kahn out of the picture because he was the socialist party candidate likely to defeat the American puppet, Sarkozy, in the French presidential election. With Sarkozy, Washington finally has a French president who has abandoned all interest in an independent or semi-independent French foreign policy. Didn’t I realize that if we lost Sarkozy, the French might revert to not going along with our invasions, as they refused to do when we had to get Saddam Hussein? With Sarkozy, the French are doing our bidding in Libya. Why in the world did I think Strauss-Kahn and some silly doctrine like the presumption of innocence were more important than French support for our wars?

Many left-wingers were just as indifferent to a legal principle that protects the innocent. They wanted Strauss-Kahn’s blood, because he is a rich member of the establishment and as IMF director had made the poor in Greece, Ireland, and Spain pay for the mistakes of the rich. What did I mean, “presumption of innocence”? How could any member of the ruling establishment be innocent? One left-winger even wrote that I had “reverted to type,” and that my babbling about presumption of innocence proved that I was still a Reaganite defending the rich from the consequences of their crimes.
It evidently did not cause the feminist, the right-wing or the left-wing to wonder that if such a powerful member of the establishment, as they regard Strauss-Kahn to be, can be denied the presumption of innocence, what would be their fate?
Independent thought is not a concept with which very many Americans are familiar or comfortable. Most want to have their emotions stroked, to be told what they want to hear. They already know what they think. A writer’s job is to validate it, and if the writer doesn’t, he is, depending on the ideology of the reader, a misogynist, a pinko-liberal commie, or an operative for the fascist establishment. All will agree that he is a no good SOB.

Dr. Paul Craig Roberts is the father of Reaganomics and the former head of policy at the Department of Treasury. He is a columnist and was previously an editor for the Wall Street Journal. His latest book, “How the Economy Was Lost: The War of the Worlds,” details why America is disintegrating.

Corsi To File Criminal Charges Against White House Over Obama Birth Certificate

Paul Joseph Watson

May 24, 2011
Jerome Corsi has told a Cincinnati radio station that he is preparing to file criminal charges against the White House for producing a fraudulent birth certificate, as the controversial author of Where’s the Birth Certificate? closes in on the people within Obama’s inner circle he claims were behind the hoax.
“We believe the birth records released by Barack Obama on April 27th, the so called long form birth certificate, is fraudulent,” Corsi told radio host Bill Cunningham.
“I’m working on filing criminal charges on the White House, I think there will be criminal charges filed very soon for having fraudulently produced a birth certificate,” said Corsi, adding that he would seek an FBI investigation.
Corsi re-affirmed the fact that he was close to identifying the individual who played a key role in forging the birth certificate, as well as the source document which the White House used to create the composite fake.
According to The Birther Report, the Clear Channel radio station on which Corsi appeared, 700 WLW later scrubbed the interview from their audio archives, a claim that was also carried by World Net Daily. The You Tube video above was made by a listener.
Clear Channel was also behind the removal of a billboard that was part of a World Net Daily campaign to bring attention to the birther issue in November 2009.
As we reported yesterday, Corsi is closing in on the people within Obama’s inner circle who were responsible for creating the fraudulent document that was released by the White House in electronic format and contains a plethora of errors and clear evidence of manipulation.
  • A d v e r t i s e m e n t
“I’m pretty well on the trail of linking the characteristics of this document to someone who’s going to have a lot of explaining to do,” said Corsi, adding that he was “hot on the trail” of one individual who “may have had a hand in this,” and that his identity would be released this week.
In a new development, WND reports that Obama’s Social Security number was issued in Connecticut, a state in which he never lived.
“The first three digits of Obama’s SSN are 042. That code of 042 falls within the range of numbers for Connecticut, which according to the Social Security Administration has been 040 through 049,” states the report.

“There is obviously a case of fraud going on here,” says Ohio licensed private investigator Susan Daniels. “In 15 years of having a private investigator’s license in Ohio, I’ve never seen the Social Security Administration make a mistake of issuing a Connecticut Social Security number to a person who lived in Hawaii. There is no family connection that would appear to explain the anomaly.”
Daniels said that Obama decided to hide his identity in the 80′s by taking a Social Security Number he couldn’t possibly have acquired without breaking the law.

Stop Raising the Debt Ceiling

Ron Paul
Infowars.com
May 24, 2011
The federal government once again has reached the limit of its legal ability to borrow money, meaning it cannot issue new Treasury debt without action by Congress to increase the debt ceiling limit. As of this month, our “official” national debt- which doesn’t include the staggering future payments promised to Social Security and Medicare beneficiaries- stands at $14.2 trillion.
The debt ceiling law, passed in 1917, enables Congress to place a statutory cap on the total amount of government debt rather than having to approve each individual Treasury bond offering. It also, however, forces Congress into an open and presumably somewhat shameful vote to approve more borrowing. If the new Republican majority in the House of Representatives gives in to establishment pressure by voting to increase the debt ceiling once again, you will know that the status quo has prevailed. You will know that the simple notion of balancing the budget, by limiting federal spending to federal revenue, remains a shallow and laughable campaign platitude.
It is predictable that Congress will once again merely delay the inevitable and raise the debt ceiling, after the usual rhetoric about controlling spending, making cuts, and yes, raising taxes. We have heard endless warnings about how irresponsible it would be to “shut down the government.” The implication is that sober, rational, mature pundits and politicians understand reality, while those who oppose raising the debt ceiling limit are reckless ideologues who will harm the economy just to make a point.
But like any debtor that has to reduce its spending, the federal government simply needs to establish priorities and stop spending money on anything other than those priorities. Interest payments on our federal bond debt likely will amount to about $500 billion for fiscal year 2011, an average of $41 billion per month. Federal tax revenues vary by month, but should total around $2 trillion to $2.5 trillion for FY 2011– an average of perhaps $180 billion per month. So clearly the federal government has sufficient tax revenue to make interest payments to our creditors. For now, those interest payments represent about 12% of the total federal budget.
  • A d v e r t i s e m e n t
  • Buy 3 Get 1 FREE!
What nobody wants to admit is this: even if the federal government has only $1.5 trillion remaining to spend in 2011 after interest payments, this is PLENTY to fund the constitutional functions of government. After all, the entire federal budget in 1990 was about $1 trillion. Does anyone seriously believe the federal government was too small or too frugal just 20 years ago? Hardly. So why have we allowed the federal budget to quadruple during those 20 years?
The truth is, in spite of how cataclysmic some might say it would be if we did not pass a new debt ceiling, it is hardly the catastrophe that has been advertised. The debt ceiling is a self-imposed limit on borrowing. The signal congress sends to worldwide markets by raising the debt ceiling is simple: business as usual will continue in Washington; no real spending cuts will be made; and fiscal austerity will remain a pipe dream.

When our creditors finally wise up and cut us off, we will be forced to face economic realities whether we want to or not. It would be easier to deal with the tough choices we face now, on our own terms, rather than wait until we are at the mercy of foreign creditors. However, leaders in Washington have no political will to admit that we cannot afford to continue spending without any meaningful limit. They prefer maintaining the illusion and putting off reality for another day.

FBI Claims al-Qaeda Fingerprint Found on Underwear Bomber Explosives

Al-Qaida bomber leaves behind a fingerprint

http://d.yimg.com/a/p/ap/20110524/capt.85334dded49d48488dd53d3cf9f0e851-85334dded49d48488dd53d3cf9f0e851-0.jpg?x=213&y=142&xc=1&yc=1&wc=410&hc=273&q=85&sig=zJfMQsigGKz8WOa2GMmVBQ--

WASHINGTON – The FBI has a fingerprint and forensic evidence linking al-Qaida's top bomb maker in Yemen to a trio of explosive devices used in recent attacks on the United States, tangible reminders that Osama bin Laden's death has not eliminated the threat from the group's most active and dangerous franchise.
Investigators have pulled a fingerprint of Ibrahim al-Asiri off the bomb hidden in the underwear of a Nigerian man accused of trying to blow up a plane over Detroit on Christmas Day 2009, U.S. counterterrorism officials said. Investigators also determined that the explosives used in that bomb are chemically identical to those hidden inside two printers that were shipped from Yemen last year, bound for Chicago and Philadelphia.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the cases remain under investigation.
Bin Laden's death leaves al-Qaida's core in Pakistan with a leadership vacuum, one that could make the Yemeni branch known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula even more prominent. The Yemeni franchise already had eclipsed bin Laden's central organization to become al-Qaida's leading fundraising, propaganda and operational arm. In a eulogy to bin Laden posted online earlier this month, the group's leader promised more violence.
"What is coming is greater and worse, and what is awaiting you is more intense and harmful," said Nasser al-Wahishi, who once was bin Laden's personal secretary.

Al-Qaida's Yemen branch has become so well-known in the United States that some commentators speculated in the days after bin Laden's death that the radical U.S.-born Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaki would succeed him. But U.S. officials and counterterrorism experts say that's extremely unlikely, given his American citizenship, his relative newcomer status, his 1997 arrest in San Diego on solicitation of prostitution and the fact that he's not even the operational leader in Yemen.
The FBI has been building cases against a number of high-profile terrorists, including al-Asiri and al-Awlaki. For now, though, there is no guarantee those cases will ever make it to a courtroom. President Barack Obama has not indicated what he would do if a major terrorist suspect was captured abroad. It's a politically sensitive issue because, even though civilian courts have been used for years to prosecute terrorism cases, Republicans have portrayed Obama as weak on terrorism whenever he discusses that option.
Intelligence officials long have believed al-Asiri helped build the Christmas and cargo bombs but have never disclosed how they were able to directly link him to the failed attacks. The fingerprint also would help establish al-Asiri's identity if he ever were apprehended, possibly allowing the Justice Department to extradite him to the U.S. for prosecution.
It's not clear who provided the FBI with the original fingerprint used to match the one lifted from the underwear bomb. But it probably came from Saudi Arabia, where al-Asiri and his brother were arrested for their involvement in an al-Qaida-affiliated terrorist cell. They were released and later fled to Yemen in 2006.
In March, the State Department designated al-Asiri a terrorist and banned Americans from doing business with him. The U.S. said he was also involved in planning to bomb Saudi oil facilities.
He's also implicated in the 2009 attack on Saudi Deputy Interior Minister Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, the country's top anti-terrorism official. Intelligence officials say al-Asiri strapped a bomb on his younger brother, who volunteered for the suicide mission. The attack killed the younger brother but only managed to injure Nayef.
Though the device was dubbed the "butt bomb," explosives experts believe the younger brother had actually held the bomb between his legs.

Feds to Mandate Black Box on all New Cars

Kurt Nimmo
Infowars.com
May 24, 2011

The feds will mandate next month that all new cars be fitted with a black box, according to news reports. So-called black boxes record information about speed, seat belt use and brake application.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been involved in the use of black boxes since their introduction. In 2006, the safety administration encouraged but did not require automobile manufacturers to install the systems and also did not set a single standard for the way data would be recorded, according to the New York Times.
In February, NHTSA administrator David Strickland said the government was considering making the technology mandatory in the wake of recalls of millions of Toyota vehicles. Strickland made the disclosure to a subcommittee hearing by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
Now they will make the installation of these device mandatory under federal law. If we are to gauge the reaction of the corporate media, this story is not very important. Outside of industry and technology publications, the story was not reported.
Computer chip manufacturer Intel showed off its event recorder last year following the Toyota recall. “With new vehicles, there will very likely be video cameras inside and outside,” said Intel’s chief technology office, Justin Rattner, in a July, 2010, interview. “It’s not particularly new or stunning, but when you combine the cameras with GPS, you’re geo-tagging the video.”
In other words, your car – like your smart phone – may soon become a surveillance device and high-tech snooping will be mandated by the federal government.

Feds Take Out More Domains

Yesterday and without warning, US authorities resumed “Operation In Our Sites” seizing several domain names associated with copyright infringement and counterfeiting. Today, yet more domains were added to the growing list. TorrentFreak caught up with one site owner who told us that while they were taken by surprise by a “pointless” seizure, they’ll soon be back.
domain seizureAs indicated in our exclusive report yesterday, the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have resumed “Operation In Our Sites”, the domain name seizing initiative designed to crack down on copyright infringement.
Following on from the most recent set of seizures in February, yesterday’s action represents the fourth phase of the operation. The following six domains were taken:
* Re1ease.net
* Watchnewfilms.com
* Dvdcollectionsale.com
* Dvdscollection.com
* Dvdsetsonline.com
* Newstylerolex.com
Today the list has grown again to include the following:
* mygolfaccessory.com
* overbestmall.com
TorrentFreak managed to catch up with PiraCee, an admin at Re1ease.net, a portal that did not host any copyrighted material itself but linked to movie and TV shows on sites like Megavideo.com.
“We were not informed [that the seizure was imminent] in any way,” he told us. “I was just presented with the ICE image upon doing a page refresh.”
For those unfamiliar with the site, Re1ease.net was founded following PiraCee’s split with Ninjavideo.net in late 2008. NinjaVideo, readers will recall, succumbed to ICE raids in 2010 and never recovered.
While undoubtedly quite busy with around 10,000 visitors a day, Re1ease.net was not one the largest sites of its type on the Internet. Indeed, others with significantly higher levels of traffic remain intact, untouched by ICE.
“I don’t believe we were doing anything wrong at all. Many higher profile sites remain unaffected,” PiraCee told us.
So why was Re1ease singled out? Despite being operated from outside the United States, did they have a bad attitude to DMCA takedowns perhaps?
“We have only ever had two DMCA takedown requests – for Source Code and Hobo With a Shotgun,” PiraCee told us. “We removed both.”
But despite losing their domain, a body-blow event for any site, Re1ease.net aren’t giving in.
“We will be back,” said PiraCee, as the site mulled over a possible domain change this morning. “Give us about a week.”
That was a few hours ago though, and things move very quickly in this game.
“Scrrls.net will be our new domain and will be up and running soon as we fix our backend,” PiraCee assured us. Indeed, it appears to be fully functioning now.
TorrentFreak continues to monitor developments in phase 4 of Operation in Our Sites and if any additional domains are seized we will update this report.

Sen. Rand Paul Seeks Gun Exemption in so-called Patriot Act Legislation

Gun Owners of America
May 25, 2011
The House and Senate Republican and Democratic leadership have reached a “deal” on extending three expiring provisions of post-9/11 legislation for four years. Following a procedural vote on Monday night, the real battle begins on the bill.
  • A d v e r t i s e m e n t
Gun Owners of America worked with Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) on legislation to exempt 4473’s (the form all buyers fill out when a gun is purchased from a licensed dealer) from that statute’s broad provisions. Sen. Paul will offer that amendment this week, assuming Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is not able to block the amendment from being offered.
Here’s a major concern: Assume the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) goes to the “secret court” (the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or “FISA” court) and argues, without anyone else in the room, that ALL 4473’s should be seized as “business records” because they are relevant to a terrorism investigation.
Can it do that? It’s certainly a big enough danger to warrant our concern and that of Sen. Paul.
In 1986, Congress enacted the McClure-Volkmer Firearms Owners Protection Act to limit BATFE access to 4473’s and other gun records. Such records can only be viewed as part of a “bona fide criminal investigation,” in connection with a trace, or pursuant to an annual inspection.
Stock up with Fresh Food that lasts with eFoodsDirect (Ad)
But under McClure-Volkmer, the BATFE clearly could not seize every 4473 in the country because of a generalized terrorism investigation.
The Paul amendment would make it clear that McClure-Volkmer is still applicable law and was not overturned by 9/11 legislation.
ACTION: Contact your two Senators. Ask them to support the Paul amendment and to oppose any effort to invoke cloture (shut off debate) on the bill in order to make the Paul amendment out of order.

Are American children to be used in medical experiments to test anthrax vaccine?

Tara Green

The highly controversial and potentially lethal anthrax vaccine may be tested on US children if the federal government gets its way. Although adverse event reports related to the vaccine among adult test subjects have included hospitalization, disability and even death, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is exploring the possibility of testing the vaccine on children.
Nicole Lurie, the assistant secretary for preparedness and response at the DHHS, recently requested that the National Biodefense Science Board submit an evaluation of safety issues related to testing the anthrax vaccine on children. The DHHS frames the possible testing as an issue of biodefense preparedness. However, the possibility of pediatric testing of the vaccine both ignores the vaccine’s dangers, and raises the specter of class- and/or race-based selection of medical test subjects which has haunted US health agencies for over a century.
Even in the months in 2001 when letters containing anthrax were mailed to several congressional leaders, heightening national fears during the post-9/11 period, Bill First, a physician and then-Senate Majority Leader, urged caution in use of the anthrax vaccine. He told CNN: “There are very real and potentially serious side effects from the vaccine and anyone who elects to receive the vaccine needs to be made aware of that. I do not recommend widespread inoculation. There are too many side effects and if there is limited chance of exposure- the side effects would far outweigh any potential advantage.”

A 2007 report by the CDC, along with the Vaccine Healthcare Centers of the Department of Defense and the watchdog group Government Accountability estimated that “between 1 and 2 percent” of vaccinated military personnel, experienced “severe adverse events, which could result in disability or death.”
If a vaccine with this kind of reputation is to be tested on children, one has to wonder which children. It is fairly certain those young test subjects won’t be the offspring of high-ranking government officials or corporate vice presidents and CEOs.
The history of medical testing carries a taint of racism, classism and opportunism, as health officials select those with less education and fewer choices to be unwitting guinea pigs in medical experiments supposedly in the name of scientific advancement.
You don’t have to be a conspiracy theorist or history professor to have heard of the notorious 40-year long Tuskegee experiments in which the US Public Health Service withheld syphilis treatment from infected black men to measure the effects of the disease.
In October of 2010, President Obama apologized to Guatemala for tests during the 1940s when the US Public Health Service used prostitutes deliberately infect 700 prisoners, soldiers and patients with emotional and mental problems with syphilis both through visits with prostitutes and pouring bacteria for the disease onto skin abrasions on the subjects’ bodies.

Vaccine testing has its own special place in the annals of this kind of integrity-free medical research. In the early 1960s, mentally disabled children at a residential state school in New York were deliberately infected with viral hepatitis so that they could be test subjects for the disease.
A 1978 CDC test for a hepatitis B vaccine which sought “promiscuous homosexual male” volunteers has some interesting connections to both HIV and the previously rare opportunistic diseases associated with the AIDS virus. As recently as 1990, the CDC and Kaiser Pharmaceuticals gave 1,500 black and Hispanic 6-month old infants an unlicensed measles vaccine without the approval and consent of their parents. White House Hires Terminator To Squash Negative Stories About Obama 240511top

In a bid to ‘squash negative stories’ about Barack Obama that appear on the Internet, the White House has hired a dedicated propagandist whose role will be to savage people who tell “lies” about the President, in a chilling reminder of how prosecutors threatened people with jail time during the 2008 campaign if they criticized Obama.
“The Obama administration has created and staffed a new position tucked inside their communications shop for helping coordinate rapid response to unfavorable stories and fostering and improving relations with the progressive online community,” reports the Huffington Post.
The man tasked with the role of “disseminating push back” against Obama’s online critics by direct order of the White House will be Jesse Lee, a blogger who has previously put out White House spin in response to claims made by Glenn Beck.
“The post is a new one for this White House. Rapid response has been the purview of the Democratic National Committee (and will continue to be). Lee’s hire, however, suggests that a portion of it will now be handled from within the administration. It also signals that the White House will be adopting a more aggressive engagement in the online world in the months ahead.”

Lee’s first Tweet as an official mouthpiece for White House propaganda and the Obama administration’s move to launch an “aggressive defense of the president and his policies” gives us some indication of what we can expect – the post includes a picture of the Terminator robot.
“If you’re going to post something online about Obama that isn’t true, Lee is going to be the one to handle you,” reports Chris O’Shea, noting that the move is about “squashing any negative stories” that could derail Obama’s re-election bid.
Lee obviously sees himself taking the role of ‘Terminator’ in destroying ‘conspiracies’ and ‘disinformation’ about the Obama 2012 campaign, similar to how Obama-supporting prosecutors and sheriffs in Missouri threatened people with jail time for telling “lies” about Obama during the 2008 campaign. News agencies in Pennsylvania and Ohio were also sent threatening letters demanding they stop airing ads exposing Obama’s anti-gun stance.

This has nothing to do with circulating “lies” about Obama, this is about intimidating, silencing and smearing anyone who dares tell the truth about Obama’s record or his highly dubious personal history.
As we documented in 2008, the Obama campaign’s effort to target “lies” about the president’s record was actually a transparent bid to keep his extreme anti-second amendment record under the radar as the election neared.
Not only was he on record as opposing handgun rights in Washington DC, Obama served on the board of the Joyce Foundation, probably the largest private funder of anti-gun and pro-ban groups and research in the country. In addition, Obama voted for a bill that would “expand the definition of armor piercing ammunition” and “support[ed] banning the sale of ammunition for assault weapons,” including 223 and .308 caliber bullets, the most common rifle ammunition. He supported the Illinois Firearms Owners Identification (FOID) Card, mandatory for residents when they buy any firearm in the state.
Obama’s record was clearly anti-second amendment to the hilt, but to communicate this fact to the public was characterized as “lying about the campaign” by Obama’s enforcers, and was met with threats and intimidation.
Expect the same thing to happen for 2012 – verifiable facts about Obama’s voting record and his stance on key issues, as well as documented examples of his deception on a myriad of different topics, will be targeted for ‘termination’ by Obama’s team of online attack dogs led by Jesse Lee.
And all this from the same administration that wants to give Obama a figurative ‘kill switch’ for the Internet that would hand the President Communist Chinese-style powers to shut down parts of the Internet for “security reasons,” in other words to silence and censor legitimate political opposition to Obama’s big government agenda.

Of course, this is all straight out of Cass Sunstein’s blueprint for hijacking and censoring the Internet by government regulation. Sunstein, Obama’s White House information czar, wrote a series of papers before the 2008 election in which he advocated banning or taxing “conspiracy theories,” including skepticism about man-made global warming, in addition to mandating by law that websites link to opposing information or that pop ups containing government propaganda be forcibly included on political blogs.
Obama supporter Bill Clinton, not known for his honesty, also recently advocated the creation of an Internet ministry of truth to address “misinformation and rumors floating on the Internet.”

TSA launches groping at high school proms, other public places

Alex Jones addresses the outrageous expansion of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) into high schools to screen students going to prom and graduation, as well as other public places.
Terrorists may strike anywhere, so security goons sticking their hands down your pants must be everywhere, or so the logic goes.

The temporary use of regular police to pat-down students a school in Santa Fe drew further attention to the order of a federal judge that TSA screeners must be present at key school functions. The school, already using a checkpoint, now must use TSA after a lawsuit was filed against other security personnel at the school who allegedly groped the bare legs of two sisters.
This disgusting development is only one phase of the strategic “soft-target” security roll-out by TSA and Homeland Security, who tell us that bus and train stations, as well as sports stadiums, shopping malls, hotels and religious centers must now be monitored by TSA-like security checkpoints.
